Threat of cults

Malawi is a very open country towards religions and there is a Hindu temple here in Blantyre. The area that gives rise to most concern is the rapid growth of the cults that we are familiar with in the UK, particularly Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons.

These cults seem to have copious funds available for projects and in particular church buildings. Indeed, the JWs have built a vast number of churches over the last 3 -4 years, most on prime ground and built to a very high standard. Probably the building projects number into the thousands!

The reason we would say these are the groups that cause us concern is because so many people in Malawi do not have the knowledge base to allow them to distinguish truth from error and so many will happily accept these cults as “Christian brothers”.

We have tried to deal with this by teaching on the cults with some of our leaders who come to Blantyre for training.
